Replace your existing grease cap with a Bearing Buddy for an easy way to monitor and maintain the grease level in your axle hub. Use a grease gun to add grease through the zerk fitting. As the hub fills, the spring-loaded piston moves outward, raising the blue auto-check ring. When the blue ring is 1/8" above the steel retaining ring, the hub is properly filled.
The O-ring inside the barrel of the Bearing Buddy maintains a seal from the outside. The pressurized grease inside the hub helps prevent water from entering and contaminating the grease. Bearing Buddy also includes an automatic pressure-relief feature to help prevent overfilling and damage to the inner seal. Once the hub is full, excess grease seeps around the edges of the piston and into the barrel while the blue auto-check ring remains raised.
Check the blue auto-check ring to see when it's time to add grease. If the ring has receded below or is flush with the steel retaining ring, more grease is needed. If the lip of the blue ring is 1/8" above the steel retaining ring, the hub is properly filled.

Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're gonna take a look at the Bearing Buddy Chrome Plated Bearing Protectors for the 2.717 Hub Bore, and it is for a quantity of two. Now these protectors are great for marine applications, the Bearing Buddy design, it's an easy way to protect your bearings by keeping water out and ensuring enough grease is in the hub. These will replace the grease caps that are on your axle hub, and they'll provide your trailer bearings with premium protection. These will prevent wheel bearing failure by providing a nice, easy way to control the grease volume in your axle hub.
They do help keep water and dirt out of the hubs in the bearings, and it'll even allow your boat trailer wheels to be completely submerged. It does stop corrosion and pitting on the bearings. If you notice, it provides a nice, easily accessible grease Zerk fitting here, so it makes adding the grease to the bearings very quick and simple. All you have to do is remove the cover, put your grease gun onto the Zerk fitting, pump the grease in there. Now it will maintain a slight controlled pressure, about three PSI, using a spring loaded piston.
This will prevent water from entering the hub. And it'll allow visual monitoring of the grease levels. We're using this blue indicator ring you see right here. This ring is designed to sit flush with the top of the cylinder when it's full. Now if the ring goes below the top, you just add grease to move the piston outward.
This does prevent overfilling and rear seal damage with the automatic pressure relief feature. Basically, the grease will seep around the piston edges and into the barrel when it's full. Now these parts are constructed of stainless steel internal parts and has a triple chrome plated steel barrel. It does ensure a longer lasting fit than some of the plastic or aluminum products that are out there. And as we've mentioned, you'll notice it comes with these rubber protective covers that when you're done putting the grease in, just push them all the way over there and that'll keep anything from getting inside.
Now to install these, it's very easy. Basically all you have to do is remove your grease cap, put this on the hub, and then using a block of wood against the Bearing Buddy, tap on that block of wood so this will install equally into your hub. This part is made in the US. A few specs, again. We mentioned it's designed to fit the 2.717 hub bore diameter. They also make these in other available diameters to fit your hub size. This will work with the outer bearing model numbers 14124, and 14125A, which are commonly found on the 5,200 pound to 7,000 pound Dexter axles. But that should do it for the review on the Bearing Buddy Chrome Plated Bearing Protectors for the 2.717 Hub Bore.

I haven't move the trailer after I put the BB1980T-SS grease cap on it. They started on pretty good then got harder about mid way on, so I got a pipe ranch to get them all the way on but over all it wasn't very hard to do it only took about 15 minutes to complete the project which is good. They really set the trailer off because the trailer is painted Black.
After being unable to get replacement Bearing Buddy's from my local boat dealer, (they claimed they were on order for 3 months) I finally got smart and found etrailer online. Love how easy it is to keep the wheel bearings greased with these Bearing Buddy's.
Just pop the cover off, hook up the grease gun, a few quick pumps, and the bearings are ready for another season. The blue inside plate moves out as the grease goes in so you do not over fill the bearing. Slid the cover back on and you are done.

wrong shipping address was applied to the order attempted two minutes after placing the order to change the address. All I got was voicemail basically two days later I received a response saying it was too late and of course, after two days, it would be too late.
Fast shipping on these bearing buddys. They are an odd size, it was an old international truck axle I used to build a trailer. I couldn't find them anywhere else, and the price was good for a quality bearing protector.
I replaced my plastic hub cap that fell off with these. The stainless steel models are extremely high quality. Very pleased with the purchase. After pounding them on my new hubs, I don't know how I can remove them to service the bearings in the future. Hopefully I won't have to take them off.

I lost one of four bearing buddies. I love these things, I just wish they made a model that could be used with greasable spindles. Now to figure out why the first one came off my brand new trailer. I used red picture on this one, we will see.

Really only needed a cap. Because not a boating trailer. But 1.81 diameter in dust caps is hard to find. It fits good. Etrailer is the place, when it comes to a large size variety.
Bearing Buddies customer support is horrible, one of my new caps was defective the grease zerk came off, I contacted them and this is what they sent me, I guess I’m supposed to bring it to a mechanic and pay $$$ to have it fixed ! Garbage !
All 3 products are working well. Before the new parts, the trailer blew a tire which bent up the fender and smashed a tail light. I ordered what I needed from eTrailer and put my trailer back together. Parts were all available and came quick. I didn't miss any fishing opportunities as a result.

Product Review: Only intimidating before you install. Really easy, pop out the OEM caps and replace with the bearing buddies, fill the buddies with your grease gun and you are done. Nice to know my (well greased by the factory ) wheel bearings now have a supply of grease under slight pressure to be sure there will always be grease in my bearings and foreign matter will be kept out.
